ABA Signed!

When I first learned about ABA, the vocabulary was hard for me because it didn’t easily translate into ASL. This made it difficult on my interpreters too–they couldn’t understand everything that was being said without knowing all these new words first-hand themselves. But now, with this video dictionary, you can easily search and find exactly how to sign “reinforcement”, “verbal behavior”, “punishment” and more.

The best way to learn is by seeing the words in action, so this video dictionary also includes accompanying videos of each term being signed by a Deaf signer. It includes over 150 terms with definitions and examples. “Applied Behavior Analysis, Signed” is an evolving document where we will continue adding more videos, examples and definitions over time. Maybe you sign something differently, or maybe you notice there are terms not included– reach out and let me know!

To make this more user-friendly and and accessible, I’ve now uploaded the dictionary onto YouTube completely for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an ASL class?

  • Nope, this is not an ASL class. Videos are no more than 10 seconds long and focus on showing you what the sign for a particular term looks like.

Are the definitions for terms signed in ASL as well?

  • At this time, the definitions are only in written English. We hope to add signed definitions and examples of each term in the future.

I sign _____ differently than you do! Does that mean I/you are wrong?

  • Not necessarily! ASL is not a standardized language and there are quite a few regional variations! It’s completely possible that you sign something differently where you live. Many of the signs used in this video dictionary were also invented by Jacqueline Wunderlich, a Deaf Board Certified Behavior Analyst, because no current sign adequately conveyed the term with conceptual accuracy.
